MTV Video Music Awards Style 101

Everyone’s favorite pop-culture extravaganza premiered last night, the MTV’s Video Music Awards 2011 to distract us all from our weather worries. The stars were out in full force, decked out in the usual bells and whistles. Sadly, no meat dress this year.
While there were certainly quite a few big reveals, Beyonce’s new baby bump, the Gaga and Britney Spears almost-kiss, whatever Nicki Minaj was wearing, most of the nominees and hosts kept things pretty tame style-wise. Not including Katy Perry, who gets an A for effort in trying to bring back the 90′s style mandarin collar dress.
This year everyone was mostly back in black, with pops of metallic, sequin and glitter. When it comes to channeling star-style this year’s crop of outfits certainly offers a more attainable look, with plenty of little-black dresses, shiny cuffs and platform heels to choose from.
So for all the star-loving, Trendanistas out there, here’s our breakdown of the hottest looks from last night’s show, from the red-carpet to your closet.

Never one to shy away from color, Beyonce sported two distinctive looks last night. On the red carpet she stood out from a sea of black in a bright orange one-shoulder dress then changed things up for her performance in a sexy sequined blazer.
Combining two fall trends – both menswear and sequins, a sparkly blazer is just the thing to take you from workday to wow. Depending on your style, you can either go with a more simplified version of this, with this sequined collar blazer or go full-on bling with this metallic gold jacket. Both are show-stopping numbers in their own right.

Popping up on nearly every Best-Dressed List, is Selena Gomez in an asymmetrical lace vision. Looking much more mature than her 19 year-old self. This teen queen seems to have grown-up and her style shows it. You really can’t beat the Little Black Dress. Up the romantic factor with a little lace and you’re good to go. This budget-friendly option (on left) is great for any trendy teen, while the other dress (on right) has a more flattering hemline and cut for women. Both are gothic glam at its best.

Katie Holmes aka Mrs.Cruise killed it last night with this casual cool ensemble. Paring a flirty dress with this fall’s “it” accessory: lace-up booties, she showed everyone else what an A-lister looks like. While we’d all probably like a pair of Proenza Schouler suede booties, why not spread out that extra $795 you have lying around for multiple purchases, rather than one pair of shoes.
These military-inspired tan booties (on left) are a fraction of the price and are surprising easy to walk in. And for wedge-lovers, these contrast lace-ups will complete any fall look nicely.
