Red lipstick has always made a statement. Cleopatra used a version of red lipstick made from crushed carmine beetles, Queen Elizabeth I of England used one made from beeswax and red plant stains almost 500 years ago and the Flappers of the 1920′s used red lipstick to show their rebellious nature. Today red lipstick is as popular as ever and its ability to make the lips look plump and kissable means that it will probably be around for many years to come! Here’s our guide to getting the sexiest, kissable red lips for Valentine’s Day.

Step 1: Match the Shade to your Skin tone

Pale skin: If you look best in blues, purples and black

The best red lip color for you is one which is blue based. This color is a classic red which makes a dramatic impact and have the added benefit of making teeth look whiter!

Celeb Example: Dita Von Teese

Lipstick: Try M.A.C Cosmetics Russian Red

Medium skin: You look best in earth tones, such as terracotta and mustard

You can get away with a wider range of red lipsticks; however the shades which have the best effects are ones with orange tints to them. These orange-reds really stand out against a medium skin tone.

Celeb Example: Penelope Cruz

Lipstick: Try NARS Heatwave

Dark skin: You look best in yellows, blues and purples

Those of you with darker skin tones should opt for deeper reds. The shade is more flattering and looks great against dark skin tones.

Celeb Example: Beyonce Knowles

Lipstick: Try Givenchy Rogue Interdit Lipstick in Vintage Carmine
