Super Sonic

Having an iconic video game franchise is sometimes both a blessing and a curse. In the hits-driven business of video games, having a game title or brand that stands the test of time is a rarity and a really special achievement. At the same time, there is always the pressure of having to make game updates that live up to the brand’s reputation (not to mention impress the rabid fan bases). So it’s great to see the legendary Sonic step up just before the holidays with the very fun and cool “Sonic Colors”.

There’s a lot to like with “Sonic Colors”. For me, most noticeably, “Sonic Colors” one, if not the, best looking game I’ve ever seen on Wii. The colors, as the title suggests, are vibrant and all the inter-planetary landscapes where this Sonic narrative gets played out look amazing.

I really enjoyed the game play itself as it alternates between 3D and 2D screens which require gamers to stay on their toes. The challenges laid out are extremely varied and clever. The collecting of the colored “Whisps” (which give Sonic very cool temporary powers) is a really fun wrinkle to the game. Truthfully, the game can be very challenging (frustrating?) at times which is actually great because the game unlikely to become a dust-collector post December 25th. The replay value here is considerable.

Sonic’s taken some lumps in the past, but with “Sonic Colors” it appears our furry blue friend is back on track in a big way. For the nostalgic gamers and Wii fans alike, “Sonic Colors” will prove to be a great gift and is certainly a top game for 2010 on the Wii.
