Sweetest Day is October 20th!
For those unaware, not unlike me, this October 20th is Sweetest Day. Primarily celebrated in areas surrounding the Great Lakes, Sweetest Day is a day to cherish both those you love as well as those less fortunate. Often referred to as another Valentine’s Day, Sweetest Day has turned into an occasion to dote small gifts upon loved ones (and who doesn’t love having an excuse for that?). Although it’s often scolded for being for being another holiday concocted by the candy industry, I believe it’s a special reason to surprise loved ones or give back to your community.
Sweetest Day is said to have originated by a committee founded by candymaker C.C. Hartzell in Cleveland, Ohio. Hartzell wanted to give back to his community by handing out small gifts. Coined The Sweetest Day of the Year Committee, they planned to distribute tens of thousands of boxes of candy to the underprivileged, elderly and sick. In an attempt to publicize the event, celebrities participated in the giving. Although Sweetest Day has yet to have mass appeal beyond the Great Lakes Region, it is a rapidly growing holiday. We can all look forward to giving back on the third Saturday of every October.
