Not Your Average Nursery

Oopsy Daisy Ferris WheelSay goodbye to pastel pink nurseries and storks galore, the newest trend in nursery decor is all about Art. And at this year's Gift Fair, Oopsy Daisy was there to show off all their great new pieces that face the greatest critics of all: the kids.

With over 50 artists creating 600 plus artworks, there's no shortage of options to fit your taste and your wallet. Whether it's on the more whimsical side or gender neutral, a great piece of art can transform an ordinary room into your dream nursery minus all the wallpapering and "baby-fying". And the best part is, they donate a portion of their annual sales to kids charities, so you can set the right example for your little one. It's a great gift for that new baby in your life.

Redwood Den CandleI'm always on the lookout for great Host and Hostess gifts, and at this year's Gift Fair I was not disappointed. While the gift of a candle may seem impersonal, Lafco New York's Home Collection is no Yankee Candle basket.

Each scent is designed to compliment every room in your home or vacation home (if only). My favorite is the Redwood Den Candle with its cedar and huckleberry tones, it evokes a cozy night-in feel. Made of soy-based wax, these 16 oz candles come encased in beautiful blown glass and have a burn time of 70 to 80 hours. I doubt the host will be able to last that long! Check out the rest of Lafco's collection for more domestic scents to warm your home.

No Brainer Gifts for Your Crush

Chicks Dig You Cereal BowlAs mentioned previously, one way to approach a Valentine’s Day gift is to think about the relationship stage you’re in.

As we all know, the first stage, also known as the “Crush” stage may be the one that’s the most fun- or at least it is until you get to the Boyfriend (or Girlfriend) stage. Valentine’s Day offers a great opportunity to take all that flirting and innuendo to the next phase with a gift that makes intentions a little more out in the open. But at the same time, a gift for a Crush still leaves things light hearted and loose. No need to go too fast at this point!  So feed his ego a bit with a fun gift such as the “Chicks Dig You” cereal bowl. He’ll laugh, he’ll like it, and maybe just importantly, he’ll know the ball’s in his court to reciprocate- hopefully in the near future.

Chicks Dig You Cereal Bowl starting at $14.99.

The Fatboy Junior BeanbagFor Gift Gurus, attending The New York International Gift Fair is "kid in the candy store" type work. While there are literally acres of gifts to see, it's always interesting to take a step back after seeing everything and think about what really caught your eye. For me, it was seeing the latest and greatest from a company called Fatboy

Fatboy is in the business of putting a new school spin on the old school bean bag chair. There are Fatboy models for kids right on up to adults. Their contemporary style will look great in rooms of the young and the young at heart. My pick is the Fatboy Junior- the perfect accessory for logging tons of comfy TV and video gaming time. Stay tune for more of the Guru picks this week.

The Fatboy Junior Beanbag starting at $149.00.

Touchdown Field Chip and Dip SetThe football-less week between the conference finals and the Super Bowl is like torture for football fanatics. But the two week tease between games gives you the chance to put together a plan for watching the big game in style.

If you’re a Cards or Steelers fan, the first thing to do is update your gear. The next thing you should know is how your tailgating tools stack up. If you’re hosting a party, you’re going to get a lot of heat if your game day spread isn’t up to snuff.  Likewise, if you attending a Super Bowl party, you should really think about bringing a little something for your host. A fun football gift for the hosts is a sure way to get the party call for next year.

BTW: Gift Guru prediction for the big game? I like the Cards in a good old-fashioned upset.

CES 2009: HD Radio

JBL On Time HD Radio with iPod DockIt feels like 2009 should be a break-out year for HD Radio. If you’re not familiar, HD Radio is a broadcast of radio stations in digital format (vs. analog) which with the help of a HD Radio receiver allows for most radio stations (even AM) to sound crystal clear without hisses or static. Some benefits of HD Radio? It's free (as in there’s no subscription), it sounds great, more radio programming available than standard radio, and has cool features like iTunes tagging (more on that in a minute). All you need to get HD Radio is an HD receiver. Currently, there are dozens of HD Radio models (car, desktop, home stereo receivers, etc.) available by the top electronics manufacturers (Sony, JVC, JBL, etc).

A great feature on some iPod docking HD Radio receivers is “iTunes Tagging”.  If you hear a song you like on HD Radio, press the “Tag” button on the HD receiver and the song information will be uploaded to your iPod when docked. Then, the next time the iPod is synched with iTunes, the song(s) will show in a “Tagged” play list for easy purchase in the iTunes store.

JBL On Time HD Radio with iPod Dock starting at $299.99.

The Lowdown on Guy Gifts

Anthony Logistics for Men Grab and Go PortablesTwo Gift Guru tips on how to “gift well” for men on Valentine’s Day.

First is easy- shop now. Take the hassle of scrambling around to find him a gift at the last minute out of the equation by shopping now for that thoughtful gift. Then, you can subtly let him know you got him a great gift putting the pressure ON HIM (sorry guys) to come up big for you February 14th.

Second Guru tip- If you’re in doubt about a Valentine’s Gift, think about the stage of the relationship your in (like the “Crush”, “Puppy Love” etc.). For example, a gift for the “Together 4 Ever” relationship is all about getting something thoughtful (not necessarily expensive!) that reflects his personal style or interests, if it happens to lean towards the romantic side, you’ll get some extra points. Some ideas for the “Together 4 Ever” stage I like are a new fragrance you love (and think he’d like too) or a sampling of his favorite food or beverage. All it takes is just a little something to remind him no one in the world knows and loves him more than you!

Anthony Logistics for Men Grab + Go Portables starting at $35.00.
