  • Favorite memory is when we were on the way to the church the day I was getting married - and he told me that it wasn’t too late to change my mind — if I had any doubts. By the way I didn’t — but it was so nice of him to care enough to ask me. And FYI been married now for over 36 years and each day gets better than the one before it.

  • Terrific prize.
I have many many terrific memories of my father. One of the best ones is from the holiday season of 2006. My parents took us on a Disney cruise and vacation. There’s nothing as much fun as everyone waking Grandpa up out in the middle of the ocean on a vacation just to go to breakfast!

  • My favorite memory with my dad was when he used to take me to ball games with him as a kid. I used to love watching either him play softball or going to White Sox games and afterwards playing catch in the yard. It was a ton of fun and to this day we still share a love of going to baseball games and try to make it to at least one a summer to cheer on our favorite team together.

  • My favorite memory of my Dad is that of late night emergency tow truck calls. He drove a tow truck for a short while and on weekends, allowed me to go along with him in my jammies!
I felt so proud of my dad, the car hero! Sometimes, he would say that it was too cold so I needed to sit with dispatch lady and he would talk to me over the radio. And he did..
He always made me feel like a little tomboy princess!

  • My dad is a huge Motown fan. He used to travel frequently when I was younger. During the Reagan years, he was gone all the time, especially when Maureen Reagan went on her 50 State Tour in support of her dad (my dad is ex- Secret Service).

When he would com back from a long trip, he’d break out all his favorite records and he’d sing to me. We would slow dance to Daddy’s Home by Shep and the Limelights.

  • One of my favorite memories is of my dad stumbling into my room in the middle of the night after I’d had a bad dream and had called for him. He never said anything, just picked me up and carried me downstairs where he sat down in an old, squeaky green rocker and rock me. He still never said anything, just held me and rocked me. Always drove the bad dreams away. :)

  • I have lots of favorite memories of my Dad - one of them was the year I tried to stay awake so that I could catch him because I knew he was the Easter Bunny and I needed proof but he never came in and eventually I fell asleep. In the morning he told me that the Easter Bunny had to leave my basket with him because I wasn’t asleep yet and he couldn’t go into the bedrooms of kids who were still awake… Then there was the warm milk he would fix me when I couldn’t sleep, the trips to Sonic for banana splits when I needed someone to talk to, teaching me to drive in a cemetery so that anyone I ran over would already be dead, the way he cried at my wedding, watching him sleep on my couch with my daughter on his chest and… I have a great dad!

  • My favorite memory of my dad is a picture I drew in elementary school of ‘my hero’ (my dad) and then wrote above it:
    My hero
Daddy, who I will live with me forever”

Even though I am older and living on my own now, he reminds me whenever he feels its needed, that he might at anytime take me up on that picture I drew for him when I was just a little girl :)

  • My dad loved to make people laugh and he loved to entertain children. My dad lived around the corner from us when my daughter was 3. He came down one warm autumn day after the colorful leaves had been gently swept into a pile on the green lawn. My daughter wanted to jump in the leaves. A beautiful memory was my dad jumping in the leaves with my daughter. Their laughter rang out through the trees as they threw the leaves up into the air and watched them float gently down upon their heads. Then they took turns burying each other and popping up as if they were surprising each other. It was one of my fondest memories because my dad was bonding with my daughter. I wish I had him here today to recall the beautiful memory with me.

  • It is so wonderful to take the time and reflect on what would be my favorite memory. It is really tough to answer because in my memory, my father was a great teacher, a great motivator, a great father and a great friend. So many snapshots flip through my mind when trying to decide what would be the best - how could it be possible. My father played, mother and father role for a lot of my life and even though he was a driven professional, he managed to be available and supportive of our interests. I remember thinking of my father very much as a suit (much more conservative corp environment). Then one day when super soaker water guns had recently hit the market and we thought they were for me and my friends - my suit - aka- father waged a full out neighborhood war. I was a senior in high school in a new town and just remember having the time of my life. My father has provided much travel, education, support but that was just simply a blast - He very often reminds me, not always with a water gun, but reminds and gently encourages me to have fun with life and enjoy and embrace every moment - can that be captured by a watergun fight - sometimes!

    yay Daddles.

  • My father took me on a cross country trip by car when I was 13 years old. We drove from Ohio to Colorado. It was a wonderful time to get to know each other when I was at an awkward age regarding my relationship with my father. I will never forget it and as an adult am amazed at his commitment to this trip as it was in the Carter years when gas prices were astronomical, as they are now.

  • My dad died exactly a year ago today, June 3, 2007. I have so many memories I don’t know where to begin because I was only 21 when he died last year. Just seeing him everyday and smelling his cologne as he got ready for work and his sense of humor. He always had a joke for everything. We used to go fishing, play basketball in the backyard, etc. I don’t even think I can find the words to write because today is such a sad day.

  • I must say that the best memory of my dad would be how hard he tried to keep his family afloat! He worked very hard to keep the roof over our head and to keep food on our table. He worked LONG shifts and on the weekends when he needed to. Growing up I didn’t have all the fancy games and toys that everyone else had. I had hand me downs from my cousins because we couldn’t afford new ones. But the fact that my dad would clean those hand me downs up and make them brand new for us meant the world! He was a true and honest man who loved his family. That is the best memory!!

  • I was twelve when my parents divorced. My Dad bought a van because he could not fit the four of us plus him in the front seat of a pick up truck. It had two seats in the front nothing else. We had a bean bag chair in the back and blankets(how dangerous this sounds now). We went everywhere to show off our brand new van. One of the things we did start doing is going to the Outer Banks and fishing every Sunday. We would load up the van with whatever we needed and take off. Just Dad and his Kids. Dad had custody of us. That was 33 years ago and it was not seen much for single Dads to have the kids. One Sunday we took my best friends Dad and her with us. Mr. Delar was scared to death. We drove that van on the sand with no problem but of course it was a bumpy ride, we were used to it. Now a days you couldn’t dare do that as the sand going into Oregon Inlet is not the same. We take our own kids down there now and even with four wheel drive we have been stuck. I will never forget those days hanging out with Dad and fishing. It was all so simple yet so important and one of the best memories I have of that time period.

  • My favorite memory of my Dad, easy! I had come home from college sick with bronchitis late Christmas Eve. I was up all night coughing. It was Christmas day and the first time that my Mom had to work on Christmas so we were all pretty bummed out. My older sister and younger brother were in the other room watching TV due to all my coughing. I was taking all kinds of cough medicines…. you name it, but nothing worked! I was lying on the couch coughing for about 30 minutes straight when my dad walked in. Without saying anything, he wrapped a blanket around me and carried me to the car. I’m still coughing pretty hard and finally I managed to say, “What are you doing?” He said “I’m taking you to the emergency room”. My Dad drove me to the emergency room and stayed by my side the entire time. Normally, this sort of thing was reserved for my Mom, the nurse and natural nurturer but Dad did a great job. The Drs fixed me up with some antibiotics and prescription cough medicine. I fell asleep as soon as we got home and slept the rest of the day. I know I was sick and we all missed my Mom terribly but that was still one of the best Christmases I’ve ever had! Thanks Dad!

  • There are definitely lots, but one of my favorite memories of my Dad actually came for me once I made him a grandfather. Seeing the love pour out of eyes as he first held as little granddaughter just touched my heart in such a huge way — and still does to this day. The fun thing is — I know now that each of my girls feels it the same way I do. He pours out his love for them, teases them, plays with them, and in so many ways lets them know from the top of their heads to the tip of their toes they are adored. In those same moments — he is telling me the same!

  • When I moved out, I kind of lost touch with my dad. The moment when I came back and I told him everything that was going on with me and he just hugged me and said that none of it mattered anymore. Then, he whispered in my ear, “I’ll always love you, don’t ever forget that!” Talk about a “tear jerker” moment!

  • My father past away about 16 years ago now, but I miss him dearly.

One of the most fond memories I have of him was the quirkiness he had even when he was trying to be serious. I loved watching him when he didn’t know I was doing it. He wouldn’t do anything out of the ordinary…he was very fragile from having Diabetes most of his life (from the age of seven till he died back in 1991). He would always sit at the kitchen table hacking away at his leather with those little tools you use to engrave lettering on belts, purses, wallets and so forth. It was just the ways in which he did it that I enjoyed. He couldn’t see very well so he would constantly put his face as close to the lettering as possible as to see what he was doing next…it was just really cute. At the time I thought he was nuts waisting the day away doing nothing more than leather writing, but now, I would give anything to watch him do that again. This time I wouldn’t take for granted the man he once was.

When he past, my mother (being a very christian woman (in her eyes anyways)) decided that since he wasn’t as perfect as he should have been he would be going to “hell” so she threw everything away (pictures, clothes and so forth) so I don’t have anything but memories to remind me of him which saddens me to no end. I miss that man and wish so much that he was here today.

  • WHAT ABOUT DEAR OLD GRANDAD??????

  • My favorite memory about my dad..Well, I don’t have to many. My dad wasn’t really in life, popped in and out. I hated him so much, and was deep, deep in my soul. I never thought in a million years, that I would have a “good” memory dealing with my dad, but, I was wrong. After years of deppression and crying, I finally got the courage to write my dad and let him know how I felt, I couldn’t say it directly to him. Needless to say, it didn’t change anything. Well after praying, and talking to my husband…my dad had his 2nd stroke, and was admitted to a nursing home, on feet moving like turtles, I went to see him. His wife told me his mind is not “right” he may not even know who I am. Favorite memory, sitting in his room, just watching him, not knowing what to say, my father turns to me and says, “I want you to know I have always loved you.” We sat there in silence the rest of the time I was there, but, that was fine. I forgave him that day, and we started over. That’s my favorite memory.

  • I have a lot of cherished memories of my dad, but the one that sticks out in my mind is of a night when it was very hot and sticky in our house and so my mom let my sister, two of my brothers, and myself camp out on the living room floor. As we all lay there fast asleep, my dad thought he needed a midnight snack and made his way to the kitchen successfully navigating his way through the scattered bodies on the floor. Well, his journey back from the kitchen wasn’t so successful. He knocked over a fan that was sitting in the doorway and woke everyone of us up–we all were screaming and had thought someone broke into the house. One of my brothers had even jumped on top of my sister and started to choke her thinking she was an intruder, while my other brother and I screamed for our mom to rescue us. When she turned on the light, my dad stood there stunned and froze with fear (holding a bowl of cereal),as we had terrified him as much as he had terrified us. It was so hilarious and we still recant that moment. It is one of the funniest memories I have of my dad…

I took this very seriously but I remember him laughing his head off the whole time. My other fond memory is my Dad teaching me how to swim. I was terrified of the water and would always wear a rubber tube to keep me afloat. My Dad asked me to join him for an underwater tea party and showed me how to plug my nose. Down I went, holding his hand with one hand and my nose with the other hand. From there we ventured into diving for coins at the bottom of the pool. He is such a patient man, to this day. • My favorite memory is actually with my stepdad. I never really knew my real dad so I was overjoyed to have a father. A few weeks after he married my mother h took me fishing, just he and I. We spent all day talking, laughing, eating squished peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. That day fishing is the day I think he became my dad, not just my mom’s husband.

  • my favorite memory of my Dad happens every Christmas season when he sets out the nativity scene in the front yard. He has Mary and Joseph traveling starting out on the far side of the yard and the 3 wise men coming from a different direction. Every morning he goes outside and moves them a little closer to the manger. They all arrive on Christmas morning when he places Baby Jesus in the manger. (All our neighbors love to watch my Dad out in the yard moving around all the people!)

  • My Dad was totally bedridden the last 4 years of his life, and during that time I was building a house from his bed, he would give me his help through the vast knowledge he had in construction. The day he died I spent with him talking to him about the house, and he told me in his mind he saw my entire home. I’ll always remember his words.

  • I was maybe 7 or 8. Daddy brought home a new glass thermos liner. I was being nosy and picked up the box and Daddy said “be careful” and just at that time, the thermos liner slid out and shattered all around my feet. I just started bawling and Daddy just walked over in his big Dad shoes and picked me straight up out of all the glass and hugged me and told me it was okay.

  • My favorite memory of my dad: My dad was a car mechanic and when I was in the 6th grade he helped me with my science project. Of course, I had waited until the day before to get started. He got a car air filter and spray painted it gold, glued on some reflector lights and we called it a UFO.

  • Daddy has been gone a year now and the memories seem to flood in every once in a while. Some of my favortie memories are of Daddy coming home from work with the newspaper tucked under his arm. After changing clothes he would find me and I would snuggle under his arm and “we” would work the daily crossword. This tradition began when I was two years old.

He never missed a game and i couldn’t believe he was going to miss this one, but some how by the start of the 2nd inning he was able to get there. It meant the world to me that he had made it to see my last game ever.

  • My favorite times come back on my first bicycle Christmas in 1955 in learning to ride and falling into mud puddles/cars since I could not use the brakes; simply didn’t know how no training wheels he took them off; teaching me to swim and boat in the gulf; then the driving lessons in the middle of a huge cow pasture; followed by the tears as he took and moved me college then down the aisle for my first marriage; there the story ends; but lives in my heart and soul. Still loving you DAD!!!!!! Sarah!

It must have gone a mile. I begged him to throw it over and over again. It’s a simple, happy memory that always brings a smile to my face.

Dad had to travel a lot for work so we didn’t really have a lot of time during the school year to spend with him, but we always had that vacation and fun times to look forward to every year.

  • I went to see my parents at their home in NC. My dad and I took a walk around his property, his home is on the side of a mountain, with a waterfall and lots of land. Just walking in silence with him, I remember him helping me up on some rocks to look around….that’s it. I was so happy to see him happy. He owned a business in MI (where I live) for many years and the stress, I feared, would kill him. A few years after that, he started coughing, found out he had an untreatable cancer with 9-12 months to live. He never drank/smoke but suffered everyday for 8 months until he died. It is so painful to me I try to remember that favorite time, and I’m glad he lived happily the last years of his life.

  • I have so many wonderful memories of my Dad… drinking cherry Cokes at the drug store soda fountain, grocery shopping at the A&P with him teaching me how to pick out the best fruits, vegetables and meats, wonderful vacations, his cars (How cool was the hardtop convertible?!!), and so much more. My favorite memory was when my mom and dad were visiting with us when my daughter was about 2 months old. Mom and I needed to run a couple of errands. We got my daughter ready to go with us, but my dad actually volunteered to watch her since she was asleep in her carrier. It took Mom and I longer than we anticipated and when we returned he had his granddaughter asleep on his lap. I asked if she had awakened and he told me that she had not — he had picked her up “just in case”. She was his third grandchild, and as far as I can remember, she was the only baby I ever saw him hold in my whole life! He really did not know what to do with babies — but did very well with older children/teenagers.
Thank you for such a thoughtful giveaway.

  • My favorite memory was when my dad taught me how to drive when I was about to turn 16. Until then we had a civil relationship but never really had any heart-to-heart conversations or even any quality time together just the two of us. Those days in the car, even as I tried his patience with my slow progress learning how to parallel park and navigate the winding roads of our hometown, provided us with the chance to open up to each other about our lives, hopes, and aspirations.

  • My Dad is also my Hero, and I have many favorite memories of him so I feel truly blessed for that. The one thing that stands out most about my Dad is his youthful sense of humor and his natural ability to make anyone laugh, or at least smile. He will think of the most offbeat things to do, that most people would never think of doing for fear they would look stupid, or worse be ridiculed for doing. But my Dad never cared what others thought and people are just naturally drawn to him because of his charisma. For example, my entire childhood I remember every Christmas my Dad would walk around the house the whole week before Christmas with Candy Canes hanging from both sides of his eyeglasses, they would just dangle and swing from the sides of his glasses. I think he would forget they were there, and it was hard to take anything he said seriously because he looked so hysterical! Or the time my mothers shrank his brand new flannel pajamas the first time she washed them. My Dad is 6 foot 4 inches tall, and so you can’t miss him when he walks into a room. Well, my Mom shrank his PJ’s from a Size XLL to like a Medium, and my Dad just got such a kick out of wearing them in spite of the fact that the bottoms came up to his knees and the arms came to almost his elbows. Just funny stuff like that is what sums up my incredible Dad!

Growing up, anytime we had ANYTHING about China in school, we would get him to come down to the school to talk to our classes, bringing along a nice selection of the artifacts we had on display in our living room. I was so proud of him! Forty years later, upon meeting some old classmates that I hadn’t seen in years, they remembered my Dad’s talks to our classes!
