Repurposed Clock for Earth Day

April 21, 2008
Posted by: Dana S.

viewfinder clockIt's not like I really need an excuse to recycle fashions and fun finds from the 80's, but if I did, then Earth Day would be the perfect justification. And in the spirit of Earth Day, this eco-friendly viewfinder clock is an awesome way to repurpose a pop culture icon from the 80's (a lot like a much-anticipated album coming out at the end of the month). "Giving new life to old spirits," the handmade clock comes complete with the famous viewfinder reel and aims to tell a story. A perfect gift for anyone young at heart.

Green Housewarming Gift

house picture frameI love when recycling and being green leads to great home decor, like this charming house picture frame. Handmade with colorful strips of recycled wood from old boats, houses, and buildings in Thailand, this darling frame is not only an eco-friendly gift, it also makes a great conversation piece. With its little roof to "protect" any 4×6 inch photo from the outside elements, and a distressed, lived-in feel, it's a perfect housewarming gift for an eclectic home!

Green Bike Basket

Carrie Biscycle BasketI'm all about an eco-friendly tote. But sometimes it's really hard to juggle a canvas bag and my handlebars at the same time. So naturally I'm head over heels (not literally, thank goodness) for this Carrie Bicycle Basket. The lacey green hamper fits right on my bike, but it also detaches with a strap for grocery shopping. And it's so pretty I want to take it everywhere!

Perfect for jaunts to the farmers market, I love it for girly urban cyclists or those who obsess over being green.

Sk8er Girl Earrings

Skateboard EarringsI never was much of a skater, but I was always pretty jealous of their gnarly boards and rad tricks (anything called an alley-oop has got to be cool). So you can bet I'm pretty stoked about these totally awesome Skateboard Earrings. Made from old and damaged skateboards, the snazzy baubles are one-of-a-kind and eco-friendly. One side shows off the wood grain; the other the authentically scratched-up artwork. It's a cool way for us non-skaters to get in on the action without, you know, doing any actual action. A pair makes a unique little gift for birthdays.

Make a Green Fashion Statement

Green Bangle from RedEnvelopeGrays and blacks were just fine for fall, but spring's bold color palette has me dying for warm weather. Obviously I can't break out the sundresses just yet, but that doesn't mean I can't sneak in a bright accessory like with these stunning green bangles from RedEnvelope.

The chunky resin bracelets come in two shades of green: bright Kelly and a lighter frosted hue. But the best part is that they actually make a difference: For each bangle sold, a portion of the proceeds will go to the Natural Resource Defense Council. So go ahead and stack 'em up. And give a few to your enviro-conscious Trendanista chums while you're at it. They make a great St. Patty's Day gift (clearly) or birthday gift.

Star Wars Mighty MuggsI’ve always loved toys and now with vinyl collectibles being all the rage I have even more excuses not to grow up. So when I spotted these hip new Mighty Muggs at Toy Fair I wanted to snag them all.

These pop art figures are ideal for Star Wars fans of any age, perfect for the hipster or the geek. Plus they come without the steep price tag of other pop collectibles. And when the time comes to retire them, they’re made from 100 percent recyclable materials so they won’t end up in a landfill in a galaxy far far away. And stay tuned for more later this year–Hasbro will introduce Indiana Jones and Marvel licensed Mighty Muggs too.

Go On an Eco Adventure

February 20, 2008

dsc02808.JPGEco-friendly toys (not surprisingly) are a huge theme at Toy Fair this year. And Sprig Toys is a line that's green from manufacturing to playing. The safari themed vehicles for the 3+ set are all made from reclaimed wood and plastic that's produced in Canada. The toys are also made in Canada which cuts down on shipping and in turn reduces the company's carbon footprint.

And the fun part–while the toys are all battery free, they do have electronic components. When kids push the vehicles they power lights and sounds. Each character is tied to a different adventure–Africa, Australia or the Arctic–and each will cause the Discover Rig truck to play different music and stories. They're great gifts to get kids thinking green. Look for Sprig Toys on Gifts.com later this year.

Green Toys

Green Toys Tea SetI got introduced to a really cool new eco-friendly toy company at Toy FairGreen Toys. All of their toys (including this pretty tea set) are made from recycled plastic milk jugs. With millions of toy recalls over the last year due to lead paint standards, not to mention the controversy over the safety of PVC in plastic toys, it's good to know that these toys are made in the USA from nothing but environmentally friendly stuff.

I also love that when you recycle milk jugs with your child you can explain that your trash can be made into toys and in turn help reduce landfill waste, save energy and lower greenhouse gas emissions. Look for Green Toys this spring.
