Time to “Green” Your Gifting

June 11, 2009

Recycle We Add It Up TeeBy now, you’re probably familiar with the “5 G’s” of Father’s Day gifting. Well, I have another “G” to add to the list. It’s “Green” gifts. Eco-gifts have been one of the hottest trending gift categories on our site for a while now. So here is a really cool green gift for dad. “WE ADD UP” is a simple idea with unique and fun execution.

A “WE ADD UP” t-shirt has two sides. On the back of the shirt, there is an environmental “action”- for example “Recycle”, “Compost”, “Buy Local” even “Shower Together”! There are around 30 different “actions” available to choose from in select styles and colors. Here’s the cool part. On the front of the shirt, are the words “WE ADD UP” as an addition equation with the sum being a unique number which represents “your place in the sequential global count of all the people who are taking steps to help stop climate change.” So each shirt is truly one of a kind. No one else will have your number.

Here’s the even cooler part. For each shirt sold, a donation is made that helps forward the “action” the tee shirt represent. For example, for sales of each “Recycle” tee, $1 is donated to The Green Project. WE ADD UP tees are 100% certified organic cotton manufactured in the US under strict fair labor practices. As I type 11,862 people have added up to make a difference. Father’s Day is a great opportunity to add some more dads to this list.

We Add Up Recycle Tee starting at $20.00.

2009 Resolutions: Give Back!

Good MagazineIt’s that time again, to make then brake then make some more resolutions for a better, happier, fitter you. Every year I make some sort of self improvement resolution, loose weight, sleep more, and drink less, but alas all goes to waste by February.

This year I decided to focus on a change that goes beyond myself and will be worthwhile, I plan to volunteer on a regular basis. And to get me jump started and I’m going to look to the experts, Good Magazine. It’s filled with fascinating articles to jump start anyone’s can-do attitude. So whether it’s being more eco-aware or donating my time one weekend rather than babysitting the couch, I’m looking forward to actually keeping my resolution this year. Check out more great charitable and volunteering gift ideas to help you give back.

Good Magazine starting at $20.00.

Eye-Catching Think Pink Gift

Too Faced Eyeshadow Duo - Betsy BabyEven as Breast Cancer Awareness month starts to wind down, the pink products continue to impress me. What better way to be aware than to purchase something that makes her (or you) feel pretty while giving back at the same time? This limited-edition duo eyeshadow has a touching backstory about a breast cancer survivor and gives funds to the cause.

When Betsy Olum was diagnosed with cancer in 2007, her wish was to have close friend and Too Faced Cosmetics founder Jerrod Blandino bring back her favorite eye shadow. Blandino took it to heart and created Betsy Baby (with Olum's help, of course), a two-shadow compact that celebrates Olum's triumph over cancer and gives $9 per sale to the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. Any woman would be happy to receive such a pretty, purposeful gift, not only this month but months to come.

Bop Basics Sophia Bush Breast Cancer Awareness TeeAs someone who has been deeply affected by breast cancer, I don’t think there can ever be too much done to promote awareness. With all the bags, hats and fanny packs out there I was relieved to find something I show my support and actually want to wear. So when I saw these fabulous Breast Cancer Awareness Tees, I knew I had to get one!

Not only are they fun to wear, but they all donate a portion of proceeds to reputable breast cancer charities. The jersey burnout tees are all pink and each has an individual design (chain graphic, superwoman logo, high-heel pump) created by a female celebrity (Nicky Hilton, Sophia Bush, Denise Richards). Check out all Think Pink gear to show your support.

Think Pink Bracelet

Pink Friendship BraceletOctober is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, so all month long we'll be sharing some of our favorite pink items, all of which are perfect for gifts or to show off yourself. On top of that, many items you purchase will donate some or all of the proceeds to breast cancer charities. I personally love this Give Pink Friendship Bracelet, particularly for friends who have been challenged by breast cancer or know someone who is battling with it.

The pink suede band represents femininity and good health, while the silver ring is etched with the touching quote "Friends nurture the soul." Best of all, 10 percent of the proceeds goes to the Susan G. Komen for the Cure Foundation, an organization dedicated to finding a cure for cancer. It's a very special way to show you care—about your friendship and about fighting breast cancer.

Donna Karan Love Forever MugWhen is a mug a work of art? When it's a celebrity-designed, ethically produced, charity-giving mug by Whatever It Takes.

More than 300 actors, musicians, artists and designers have donated their time to create these small symbols of hope, with each mug raising money for the celeb's chosen charity. Like style maven Donna Karan and her Love Forever Mug. The white china cup features Karan's pink self-portrait and a Love Forever print, with proceeds going to Spirituality for Kids.

I think this one makes a lovely Mother's Day gift, but with so many to choose from, you can easily give according to the cause that suits your friend or loved one best. And isn't giving back what it's all about?

Make a Green Fashion Statement

Green Bangle from RedEnvelopeGrays and blacks were just fine for fall, but spring's bold color palette has me dying for warm weather. Obviously I can't break out the sundresses just yet, but that doesn't mean I can't sneak in a bright accessory like with these stunning green bangles from RedEnvelope.

The chunky resin bracelets come in two shades of green: bright Kelly and a lighter frosted hue. But the best part is that they actually make a difference: For each bangle sold, a portion of the proceeds will go to the Natural Resource Defense Council. So go ahead and stack 'em up. And give a few to your enviro-conscious Trendanista chums while you're at it. They make a great St. Patty's Day gift (clearly) or birthday gift.
