Guru Resolution: Laugh More

They say that laughter is the best medicine and I am ready to put that saying to the test in 2013. Psychology Today says that, “it lowers anxiety, boosts the immune system, and aids circulation.” All of that sounds great! So, this year is all about me seeing the bright side of life. Not that I don’t try to do this already, but I need to make more time for myself to just sit down and enjoy a good laugh more often. I, like so many working folks out there, can get caught up in the stresses of daily life and forget the fact that life is meant to be enjoyed. Who remembers the last time they laughed until their belly hurt? Or, when you laughed so your eyes got teary?  My last laughing episode was over the whole “Ikea Monkey”  phenomenon and it was the first in a long while. Well, I’m saying goodbye to my forgetful ways and am welcoming a good belly laugh at least once a week in 2013. How? I have a strategy ready to go!

1. Re-watch “Arrested Development” – something about that show, and by something I mean EVERYTHING, always makes me laugh. So, fitting in a couple of episodes per week will be just what the doctor ordered.

2. Keep my eyes peeled for funny things that happen throughout the day and retell one of the stories to at least one other person each day. Telling stories and making other people laugh makes me happy too, so this will be a lot of fun to try out. I’m not saying that I will be able to do this every day, but it’s a good goal to have.

3. Watch more comedy movies. I have this odd habit of watching horror and suspense movies and getting really freaked out. It’s some terrible form of masochism where I secretly love torturing myself. But, this year I am going to try to put a kibosh on that and opt for a funny flick whenever I can.  I learned on a recent trip to California for work that if I watch funny shows on TV before bed, I actually sleep better! I think I’ll start with this list of 100 Funniest Movies of All Time made by IMDB. But, what movie always makes you laugh? Comment on this post and I’ll add the movie to my Netflix queue!

4. See live comedy shows. After taking a few improv comedy classes last year, I realize how much fun live comedy can be. And, since we live in New York City where there are comedy clubs galore, I want to get out and see live improv at least once a season.

So, there you have it. Who knows, maybe my blog posts will get funnier as I saturate my life with all things hysterical. We all will win from this resolution!
