Happy Columbus Day

Is it just me, or is Columbus Day one of the most confusing holidays out there? It’s a federal holiday, observed the second Monday in October, but if the government remains shut down on Monday, how can we even tell they are taking a holiday? The post office will be closed, regardless of what Congress is up to, as will many banks. Columbus Day is a public holiday in many, but not all states. In Hawaii, it’s called Discover’s Day, and Native American’s Day is celebrated in South Dakota. Some people view Columbus as a great explorer, while others grump that there is no Christopher Columbus to begin with; he was actually named Cristoforo Colombo. They also point out he was aiming for China and kept stumbling around in the Caribbean. So tell me, do you celebrate Columbus Day, and if so, how? Let us know in the comments section below.
