The Gift: The Fitbit Ultra (available now for around $100)

The Scoop: It’s been said “What can be measured, can be managed”. Fitbit is a tiny, wearable gadget that measures many of your vital wellness components. Going beyond a simple pedometer, Fitbit is integrated with a sharp looking and well thought out website which allows for tracking of your physical activeness and sleep and eating habits. The Fitbit site walks you through the very simple account set up and once your Fibit knows you are, just clip it on and you’re off the races (be it walking or running). You wear the Fitbit pretty much all the time.

Then, when you sync your Fitbit (wirelessly or via an included USB dock) to the site, you’ll see up the the minute data of your physical activity. Information such as steps taken, calories burned, floors climbed, and miles covered all keep you very motivated to stay active. Other activities such as sleep and caloric intake can be entered and measured as well. Add some incentives such as milestone badges and social sharing, you have an impressive wellness companion to help you keep motivated and active. Ultimately you’ll find yourself, making smalls decisions that add up in a big way to promote good heath.

I have spent a few weeks with a Fitbit* and have found myself routinely making choices such as taking the stairs over an elevator or taking a longer route on my walk home just so I can see it show up on my Fitbit dashboard.

For me, the Fitibit has been a great tool to keep me thinking about my daily physical activity which, subsequently, has been leading me to be more active.

A Great Gift For: The fitness and gadget lover. Also, a great idea as a self-gift to promote wellness and help you stay motivated.
