If you thought the tablet revolution would bypass the little ones, you were mistaken.

Today Leapfrog’s entry into the tablet world, a.k.a. “LeapPad” goes on pre-sale and will hit retail shelves August 15th. As the industry leader in educational toys, LeapFrog naturally saw a great opportunity to bring educational content, personal creativity and smart gaming fun into the hands of 4 to 9 year old’s. Gifts.com got a firsthand show and tell of LeapPad from the other day and came away impressed.

The kid-friendly, ruggedized LeapPad has a very familiar tablet esthetic and feature set with its 5-inch touch screen, built-in camera (for stills and video capture) and embedded microphone. All the hardware is geared toward giving kids the ability is consume educational content (like ebooks, math and science), but equally important, tools to create a custom experience to live both on the tablet and online.

LeapPad will retail around $100 and comes with enough built-in content to get kids started. LeapFrog noted around 100 additional games, apps, and books will be available by year’s end ranging in price from $5 to $20.

While Leap Frog’s bread and butter centers around the educational experience, we were even more impressed with the creative experience LeapPad offers kids. LeapPad’s “Creativity Apps” uses photos, video, and audio clips to encourage creative play limited only by the creator’s imagination.

A very cool app called “Story Studio” walks kids through a process of adding pictures, writings, audio recordings and drawings to eventually produce a one-of-a-kind book that can be shown off on LeapPad or shared by email or even Facebook.

LeapPad will be a very popular gift idea this year not only because it fosters learning and creative, artistic development, but maybe just as importantly (to parents), LeapPad gets kids’ hands off the more expensive and breakable gadgets!
