New Guru: Kathryn Drury Wagner
On July 1st, our newest guru, Kathryn Drury Wagner, joined the Gifts.com editorial team. She will be taking the helm as the mastermind behind content on the blog and site-wide. Kathryn was previously an editor at Honolulu magazine and is the author of The Ultimate Guide to Shopping on Oahu and Hawaii’s Strangest, Ickiest, Wildest Book Ever!, which will be published this fall. She traveled the world covering stories for Power & Motoryacht and Country Living Gardener, lucky girl. We’re so happy that she is helping make Gifts.com your destination for celebrating life’s moments.
But, we don’t want Kathryn to be the wizard behind the curtain, so I did a little Q&A to help you get to know her better. I have no doubt that one day soon we are all going to wonder how we ever lived without her fabulous ideas. Welcome, Kathryn!
Want to see some of Kathryn’s favorite picks so far? Check out the collage below for a sneak peek.
Q. What do you love about giving gifts?
I love matching people to the perfect gift, when you can really feel that “click!” I’m also a hopeless shopaholic, and gift giving gives me a virtuous excuse to browse through my favorite stores.
Q: What is the best gift you ever gave and why?
A pink-and-purple rocking horse I got for my two daughters. They play with it, literally, daily: riding it, feeding and grooming it, curing it from horse ailments, even dressing it up. I had no idea it would be such a hit.
Q: What is the best gift you ever got and why?
Is it corny to say my engagement ring? I waited a long time for that sucker, and for the man who went with it.
Q: What do you like to do when you’re not thinking about gifts?
I’m a big reader, and I try to squeeze in some exercise. My current favorite is the Bar Method, which combines ballet, Pilates and torture.
Q: What previous experience led to you becoming a Gift Guru?
In addition to writing the shopping book, I have also been the editor of a magazine for one of the world’s largest retail centers, Ala Moana Center. I also had a blog, “Guilty Pleasures,” about shopping, trends and fashion, and I’ve been a columnist on natural beauty topics. As a freelance writer, my byline has appeared in Los Angeles Confidential and Spirituality & Health.
Q: How do you tap in to what gift givers want?
I’ve been lucky to work with a lot of different audiences over my career, from boat captains and gardening enthusiasts to parents and foodies. The key is to put yourself in the readers’ shoes and always focus on their needs. I’m thrilled that I’ll be helping Gifts.com visitors find the perfect gift and make their lives easier.
