The tote is not only a fashion statement, but also a form of self-expression. It screams out your station in life, your attitude, even gives a hint to the baggage you are carrying around. So, when you have a friend (like me) who still uses re-usable freebie bags to carry around life’s necessities, you need to have a care-frontation. Or, at least coax her in the right direction by getting her a fabulous tote that matches her amazing style. I love matching up gifts to personality types, so here is a list of different types of ladies and the tote that will suit them best. Do you agree with my choices? Did I miss any personality types that you know oh too well? Share your thoughts in the comments section below.

For the Fashion Victim

Whenever she spots something she saw in the latest issue of her favorite fashion magazine, she scoops it up. And then gives it away six months later. Her style changes seasonally, and you can’t give her something expensive because it will end up at Goodwill. So, have some fun and get her something trendy and inexpensive, like the Emperia Studded Tote ($54) that has a roomy size of 16″W x 13″H x 5″D.

The studs give it a fashion-forward look. Check out New York’s Metropolitan Museum of Art Exhibit “Punk: Chaos to Couture” for more high-fashion punk inspiration. This studded faux leather tote ($108) from Steve Madden really drives home the punk theme too.

For the Classic Type

Classic women buy designer but not for the label. That’s their secret. They make smart decisions but don’t sacrifice style while doing so because, really, there’s no need. The Longchamp Le Pliage tote bag ($145) has seen a massive resurgence in popularity due to its timeless appearance and chic attention to detail that only the French can muster. Every classic woman on your list needs one of these if she doesn’t have it already. The large size is 12 1/4″W x 11 3/4″H x 7 1/2″D.

For the Busy Professional

Not that she will wear a suit every day, but offices tend to be fairly conservative and her style should match. If she’s still bringing things to the office in a backpack, you need to help her, stat. I love this Cole Haan Village tote because it is simple, is a solid brand, and won’t ruffle any feathers even in the red, as pictured here. It is a little pricey at $198, but if a few of you chip in, she will use this for years and it will probably help her climb the ladder. It’s 13 1/2″W x 14 1/2″H x 1 1/4″D, the perfect size for file folders and a laptop, too.

For the Hipster

Hipsters love quirky designs, ideally made by someone they know, locally and in an eco-friendly way. This Heart Tote Bag ($45) delivers! It’s made in hipster heaven: San Francisco. And it is crafted from organic cotton and vegetable-dyed leather. It also has that stylish and arty heart emblazoned on the front, which is a total hipster “do”.  16″W x 18″H.

For the Preppy Type

The preppy set love all things nautical, brass or gold finishes, and anything monogramed. Sweater sets, shift dresses and loafers, all in fun colors, are her low-maintenance but always adorable staples. This lady could be a J.Crew model on any given day. So, embrace her love of New England style with a tote that can go from the store to the shore without skipping a beat. This sailor striped canvas tote from Baggu is a perfect addition to her collection. At only $24, you could get yourself one too! 11″W x 15 1/2″H x 5″D
